Nylon whips are made from paracord. The name Paracord is the shortened version or nick name of parachute cord. Paracord 550 or 550 cord are other nick names of parachute cord derived from it's 550 lbs. tensile strength. Type III 550 Paracord is the commercial version of Mil Spec 550 Parachute Cord, also known as Mil Spec Paracord or Mil Spec 550 Paracord.
The two most common types of paracord used in nylon whip making are 550 cord, and 650 coreless cord. The 550 paracord has a nylon outer sheath and seven cabled inner nylon strands for a core. This cord requires pulling the inner strands (core) out leaving the sheath which will now lay flat. 650 coreless has the same outer sheath as the 550 cord but without the core, no disassembling required. I did ask about the name 650 coreless. Why 650 when this cord has a tensile strength of 300 lbs. The manufacture did not have a good answer. I'm going to leave it in the mystery column.
Some makers also use 750 cord which is slightly larger than 550 cord. Once the core is removed it's easier to stuff BB's into if they are using a BB loaded core.
Not all paracord sheaths are made of nylon, you will need to verify that before you buy the cord.
The price of a whip made by a professional whip maker has more to do with the time required than the cost of the material. Nylon is less expensive than leather but the detail is the same. Also, demand for nylon whips is increasing faster than supply. This keeps a good quality nylon whip in the price range of the leather ones.
Nylon whips are more durable and last longer in poor weather conditions. They resist mold, mildew, rot and can be used in humid and rainy weather. Ease of care is another advantage. A damp cloth to remove dirt or a dry cloth if it's wet and then hang it up. Pretty much maintenance free. You should avoid putting it in hot water (I guess that needed to be said). Some makers say their nylon whips are as good in quality and function as a leather whip.
Customization and color choices are very popular and available with nylon whips. Paracord is made in hundreds of colors and patterns.
These soft nylon sheaths are easy to plait (braid) and come in a nice uniform size.
